#41 National Cousins' Day

#41 National Cousins' Day
July 24, 2013

Say a quick hello to all your cousins today. I think we'll celebrate by watching one of these extended family movies:

Which would you choose? Or do you have another suggestion?

#37 National Lollipop Day

#37 National Lollipop Day
July 20, 2013

I'm really loving how most of these holidays involve delicious food! ;) That's something I can always celebrate!

Interesting fact: George Smith, the owner of a small American candy store, came up with the sweet's name. In the early 1900's, he called the candy a "lollipop" after his favorite racehorse, Lolly Pop.

Growing up, I always remember calling such sweet candies suckers, seldomly referring to them as lollipops. So now, I'm just plain curious to find out - is there a difference between a sucker and a lollipop? Or is it the same thing, with different titles depending on where you grew up?

ps- don't worry we enjoyed some lollipops before we even thought to take a picture!

Interrupting cow - MOO!!

I'm going to college.
What for?
To learn cow-culus!

What do you get when you throw a cow in the air?
A milk shake

What did one cow cut in half say to the other?
I feel like I'm calf the animal I used to be!

My favorite cows to appreciate!

#35 Wrong Way Corrigan Day

#35 Wrong Way Corrigan Day
        Yellow Pig Day
        National Peach Ice Cream Day
July 17, 2013

The 17th of July is quite an eclectic summer holiday, ranging from misguided pilots or colored pigs.
My favorite story of the day:
Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan became an American folk icon during the Great Depression when, during a July 17 flight that was supposed to take him from Brooklyn to Long Beach, Caliofornia, he flew to Dublin, Ireland, instead. The accomplished Irish-American aviator had previously been denied a flight route from New York to Ireland due to poor conditions and age of his Curtis Robin monoplane.

Many still speculate that Wrong Way Corrigan went the "wrong way" on purpose, but if that was so, he took his secret to the grave; he passed away in 1995. Today we celebrate "Wrong Way Corrigan Day" to either pay tribute to his rebellious spirit or chuckle at his directional dyslexia.

It's also Yellow Pig Day, which has something to do with math, so I immediately wrote it off. ;) But we can't avoid National Peach Ice Cream day! We're hoping to try this new recipe sometime soon.

Today's letter was accompanied by a CD of quartet tunes and red bow ties! As we donned our lovely apparel, we listened to some fine tunes. We had a silly time posing with our bow ties as well!

#30 National Pecan Pie Day

#30 National Pecan Pie Day
July 12, 2013

Are words really necessary? ;) I will say we decided whose grandmother's recipe to use based on how much caro syrup it called for, gotta be stingy with those imports! haha. Speaking of which, the pecans came from our friends who set this all up. They are just plain sneaky, too! When we took our last trip to Barcelona we asked if they wanted us to bring them anything and, of course, they told us to bring them some pecans. Little did we know they would give them back to us! Such selfless people! We couldn't ask for better friends! Thank y'all, you sneaky people!

#29 National Cheer Up the Lonely Day

#29 National Cheer Up the Lonely Day
or Blueberry Muffin Day, take your pick...even if it's both.
July 11, 2013

Since we didn't make it back from spending the night at a friend's house until mid-afternoon, our options for today's holiday were a little limited. But we didn't spend the morning babysitting, so we figured those kids would have been lonely if we hadn't been there, right?

In the evening we chose Sweet Home Alabama from the suggested list of movies and enjoyed watching it while we ate our yummy Blueberry muffins. I'm still not sure what Sweet Home Alabama has to do with cheering up lonely people, but it's a cute movie and we didn't need much excuse to watch it.

Not only did we have yummy blueberry muffins! But they were a mix from the States! = yummy and easy!

Give You Smile! (Beth's Birthday)

I'm woefully late on updating y'all on Beth's birthday celebration, but here's a belated look at all the fun! Because my parents were in town and we had to take them back to the airport on Beth's actual birthday, we celebrated with a steak dinner at our friend's house.

Give you smile! The balloons we found in Africa may be in English but the translation is lost on us.
So glad Mom and Dad got to join in on the fun!

Happy birthday Friend!

Before we left for the capital on her actual birthday, we surprised Beth with a little scavenger hunt.

sneaky, sneaky
(pardon the goofy smile. I was still a lil swollen after sinus surgery)
Some of the clues were quite a stretch and some were just plain silly, but let's see which ones you can guess (everything was hidden in our house):

A. When the door is shut, within you can still see
As many colors as a mutt, if completely full is she

B. Up top it rests quite capably
Shelved among others of it's kind
The theme within is most shapely
So if you look high, the next clue you'll find

C. Do not fret
The search continues yet
If you become to tightly strung
All your pieces will be flung

D. Down the rail we might slide
because a gift of yours, I did hide
It's opposite of the door
awaiting you on the first floor

E. Look high and low
the staple to find
look around zero
and maybe behind

F. Near a cozy place for two
Lies another package for you

G. Lines running to and fro
A web that sways, when the wind does blow

H. Past the coats and furs, lies a land most fairy
Some even told Lucy that it was imaginary
A place full of wonders, which can sometimes be scary
If you search in the beginning, you'll find something to carry

I think Mom and I had as much fun coming up with all the rhymes (and Dad pitched in, too!) as Beth did solving them.

At each location was a small lil happy, including lotion, candle, games, scrapbook, and ending with the Birthday Video all of you helped me compile!

Beth LOVED her birthday video! Thanks to all of you for sending in your videos and making Beth's birthday a happy one!

A few weeks after her birthday, all the cards y'all sent finally arrived (african mail, what can you say?). The birthday celebration that lasted for weeks. ;) Happy birthday Beth! We love you!

#27 National Sugar Cookie Day

#27 National Sugar Cookie Day
July 9, 2013

It's true, all these holidays are doing wonders for our diets. ;)

Our friend made some delicious sugar cookies with cookie dough icing this past spring break, so on this auspicious holiday we were gifted with the recipe. These cookies might as well be called, 'delicious cookie with delicious icing made for you because they taste delicious,' it just explains the situation better. ;)

Enjoy the recipe copied from www.bakenquilt.com:

Soft Sugar Cookies with Cookie Dough Frosting
Author:
Recipe type: Dessert
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 24
Soft Sugar cookies topped with cookie dough flavored frosting.
Ingredients
  • For the Cookies:
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or more as needed)
  • For the Frosting:
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • ⅓ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 1½ tsp. vanilla extract
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, or more as needed
  • ⅓ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the shortening and sugar on medium until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  3. Add heavy cream and vanilla and beat until smooth.
  4. Add salt, baking soda and baking powder, followed by the flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until the dough comes together.
  5. The dough should be soft but not sticky; if it is sticky, add more flour 1 Tbsp. at a time.
  6. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 350F.
  8. Roll out the dough to 3/8 inch thick. Cut it into 3-inch circles and transfer to baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until the tops are puffed and no longer shiny and the bottoms are just barely golden brown. Do not overbake. Transfer cookies to a rack to cool completely.
  10. To make the frosting: beat together butter and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Mix in flour and salt, followed by vanilla. Add 4 cups of powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  11. Add heavy cream and beat until fluffy. Add more powdered sugar, as necessary, ¼ cup at a time, until frosting is thick but spreadable.
  12. With an offset spatula, spread 1 heaping tablespoon of frosting onto each cookie. Sprinkle with chocolate chips, pressing lightly so chips adhere to frosting.

#26 National Video Games Day

#26 National Video Games Day
July 8, 2013

As I'm sure you can well imagine, our challenge today was to play video games! We don't have a gaming system but our neighbors do! So we headed over for some friendly competition on the Wii. Not to brag or anything but I pretty well demolished Beth and Jordan at Mariokart with a sweeping score of like 9th (out of 12) place! haha. It's obvious that we don't play much because the computer owned us!

We are intense gamers, in case you couldn't tell...

There was even some tasty chocolate as a prize! Yes, I shared!

It's Time to Park It

Life along the Med never gets dull, but last week's events took things to a whole new level! Every minute I "rent a taxi," as they call it here, I fear for my life and offer up many thanks when my feet are on solid ground nowhere near the street again.

Our friends allowed us the use of their car in their absence, so it's been a brand new kind of adventure driving a standard through downtown traffic around here. 'Rules of the Road' technically exist, but it's much more like 'Suggestions of the Street.' There are stop lights, and you will generally find taxis and learning drivers stopped there, but that's about it. It's definitely "a give an inch, take a mile" kind of scenario. Of course, there are more roundabouts than stop lights in this city and those things can be plain confusing.

One of the biggest road hazards (for drivers and pedestrians alike) are all the motorcycles and vespas. It's as if they all believe that all basic traffic laws (like traveling with and not into oncoming traffic) don't apply to them, and you can throw common courtesy out the window like the trash. Let me tell ya, these things are everywhere! They fill the alleys in the medina, the sidewalks, and every other crevice they can find. I was just mentioning to a friend last week that I should probably get one of those motorcycles, you know, to blend in with the culture and all. That's definitely not going to happen now.

Tuesday I was showing some friends around town and had just left them to head on back home to meet a friend for coffee. As I pulled into the roundabout and followed the cars in front of me, I decided I would be nice and let the truck (18 wheeler pulling an empty bed) to my right move on through the roundabout before I let off the brake. Apparently, his response to my kindness (which I must admit is few and far between when driving around here - and now we know why) was to scrape the side of the car with his wheelbase. Oh yes, it was an ugly sound and it sure did leave some ugly marks.

I knew this day would inevitably come, but it was just so unfortunate that I was alone and in someone else's car. The traffic policeman told us to move out of the roundabout and pull over to the side. So I got out of the car to survey the damage, but also the situation. I had no idea what to expect in this context in terms of culture. While the policeman and other driver were assessing the car, another van stops and a man is telling me that I left something in the roundabout. So we walk into the circle of traffic, he picks up two pieces of trim from the car door and jollily hands them to me. Check. He's done his good dead of the day. I'm just glad he was the only participating spectator.

Now I knew I was in for a treat with all kinds of new Arabic words being thrown at me. We've basically gotten to the point in language, finally, where we can pretty well understand and be understood - if it's subject matter with which we've had exposure. Let me just let y'all know, there wasn't a chapter in our "Arabic textbook" titled, 'Words to Use When a Car Accident Occurs,' although, maybe there should be.

All in all, after about 5 minutes of the policemen asking us for papers, he decides that we need to go to the police station. ???!? Yes. That's what I thought too. But what's even more...African, is that he suggests I give the other driver (who damaged my car) a ride to the police station! haha. Only in Africa.

The police station was exactly what I was expecting, after living here for just over a year now. There wasn't a lot of order, but there were big guys strutting around with their belly pooches and inflated egos. The other driver and I sat in what I later learned was the police chief's office in chairs opposing each other on the front side of his large flat desk. The room was hot, the dying fan squeaked, animals under the window meowed and hissed, and the clock lazily kept time. Just like any other office, a pile of purchased electronics boxes (the kind you keep after buying something new, in case you want to return it) sat in the corner in a pitiful attempt to remain hidden and look organized behind the locked metal cabinet. A lone pair of handcuffs hung just over the chief's right shoulder. I absently wondered if that was the stations only pair.

By the time we had found our way to the police station, the officer who witnessed the incident was waiting in the chief's office. After no small amount of searching and collecting the desired paperwork and multiple Arabic men speaking to me all at once, the others left to make photocopies and the chief slowly explained to me that they would give me a copy of the other driver's information but that we needed to come back in the morning to finalize the claim.

Dealing with the insurance and the third-party insurance adjuster, oddly named "The Expert," has proven to be an interesting study of culture. In this country it's not the police who determine who was at fault in the wreck, but the insurance agency. So the next morning, we met the other driver at the police station (yes, I brought back up with me for this one), then drove together to my insurance company, where the other driver gave his statement and went on his way. The insurance agency gave us instructions on how to get reimbursed for repairs and we were surprisingly able to complete most of the paperwork the very next day. That's really quite a feat around here this time of year.

Oh, and I almost forgot, just after we were headed back from finishing all the running around, guess what happened? Yep, we got rear-ended! One can only laugh at that point, especially since the bump didn't leave any damage. To end on a positive note, we left the car at the mechanic's this morning and should have it looking new again in no time!

#25 Chocolate/Strawberry Sundae Day

#25 Chocolate/Strawberry Sundae Day
July 7, 2013

While we're having a great time with all the activities our friends left to us in their absence, we all really  miss them! Can't wait for their return, but in the meanwhile, perhaps some ice cream will calm us down. ;)

Today is Chocolate/Strawberry Sundae Day! What a day to celebrate tasty treats! We didn't get a chance to create this delicious favorite yet, but if this week is anything like last week-I'm sure we'll be needing it soon.

#24 National Fried Chicken Day

#24 National Fried Chicken Day
July 6, 2013

A new holiday tradition that I'm sure will become dear to all of our Southern hearts, National Fried Chicken Day! This was a recipe we could not pass up on! So Beth fried up some chicken right tasty for us!

And a lil Facebook stalking tells me that our friends ate at KFC today to join in on our fun! Whatever excuse ya need for eating some yummy fried food, right?

#23 Workaholics Day

#23 Workaholics Day
July 5, 2013

Today's suggestions for you totally depend on how you classify yourself. If you consider yourself to be a workaholic, then this day is made for relaxing. On the other hand, if you consider yourself to be...well, normal...then today is the day for you to pick up the slack and finish an overdue project or get to work early.

For us, our challenge was to create a word or phrase out of specific magnetic letters given to us. This is as far as we've gotten, but I say that translating the wrong word counts for at least half! ;)

 عيد دما خدما
In case you were wondering, this phrase is totally lost in translation...well, MY translation at least. It's like saying, "Party of always working"

The sad part is that even the Arabic isn't quite right, but I totally blame that on the magnetic letter manufacturer, because we don't have the right letters for the end of the words.

So I'm curious, how would you define a workaholic? Is that a good or bad thing?

#22 Sidewalk Egg Frying Day

#22 Sidewalk Egg Frying Day
July 4, 2013

Bet you didn't know that the fourth of July is home to another, not quite some popular holiday, called 'Sidewalk Egg Frying Day'. Sometimes I just have to wonder how these holidays came about, but it sounds like the beginnings of many conversations my friends and I have, we just don't go so far as to make our strange curiosities into national holidays - we simply move to different continents. ;)

Since sidewalks aren't really a thing here, we gave our sidewalk egg frying attempt a try on our friends' patio (Yes, at their suggestion). I'm just now realizing that this picture looks like it was taken inside, but I can guarantee that that egg was cooking on the patio.

Patio Egg Frying Success! Less than 2 hours!
On a complete different note, we've noticed that there aren't many products made of wood around here, but marble and tile are abundant and relatively inexpensive. That's one more thing that isn't a big deal but it is different. The good thing is we don't really have to worry about the house burning down, right? ;)

Independence Day!

Happy Fourth of July to all fellow Americans, at home and abroad! Today I want to take a moment to thank the men and women who served and protected our country, making the freedoms we enjoy today a reality!

Yummy food was, of course, involved in our celebration!
We had two varieties of patriotic cupcakes: Dark Chocolate with Peanut Butter frosting and Red Velvet with Cream Cheese frosting! They were both delicious, although next time I may put the cream cheese frosting on the dark chocolate cupcakes.

Patriotic me!

Thanks to my lovely family for sending fun decorations to make today more festive!

A little fun with the fireworks!

USA! LOVE the fact that this picture came out!

Wrapped in red, white, and blue forever!

Sweet friends!

#21 Eat Beans Day!

#21 Eat Beans Day!
July 3, 2013

Today our friends had already arranged a game night for us all, so we packed up some bean salad/salsa and headed over to play a new game nicknamed, The Bean Game (and no, Dad, it doesn't include loud farting).

Snacks and games = a successful evening!

The actual name of the game is Bohnanza. You can find a game review here. It was a fun, albeit long card game with 6 players. Jordan took us all to town tonight, but it was fun to relax with friends.

Now on to the holiday preparations! So excited about the Fourth tomorrow, but it may be one of the hardest days to be away. On American holidays like this (and it doesn't get much bigger than Independence Day), I become keenly aware that I'm living in a different culture. But we'll be getting together with other countrymen and there may even be some works of fire in the mix!! :)
